What is an Associate Degree Program? (continued from top)
An associate's degree program usually takes two years of full time study at a college or vocational school. There are three basic types of associate's degree programs. The first type of associate's degree program is the Associate of Arts degree (AA). This is a two year degree that is often completed through a community college. This type of degree is typically the preparatory course of study that is transferred to a college or university toward a four-year bachelor's degree. The AA degree is usually focused on the humanities courses such as arts and languages. An Associate of Sciences (AS) degree program is focused more on mathematics and the sciences.
Unlike the other two types of associate's degree programs, the Associate of Applied Science degree program (AAS) is usually a goal of its own. This type of degree is usually available from community colleges or tech schools. Generally, the AAS is directed toward occupational degrees. AAS degrees can help propel you into a career in nursing, physiotherapy, lab tech, welding, construction, plumbing or electronics. If you have a desire to work in one of the vocational careers, begin by enrolling in an associate's degree program.
